Germany’s New Economic ID (W-IdNr): A Simple Guide for German Businesses

Germany is rolling out a new identification number called the Wirtschafts-Identifikationsnummer, also known as the Economic ID, to streamline tax processes and reduce administrative work for businesses. Starting from November 2024, the German Federal Central Tax Office (Bundeszentralamt für Steuern, or BZSt) will begin assigning this number gradually to businesses across the country. The W-IdNr is not meant to replace your existing VAT ID or tax number, but it will complement them and become an essential part of doing business, particularly for online sellers operating in or selling to Germany.

What is the Germany Economic ID W-IdNr?

The Germany Economic ID (Wirtschafts-Identifikationsnummer) is a new national business identification number being introduced by the German government to uniquely identify all economically active entities and individuals in tax and administrative processes. The Germany Economic ID is a permanent, unique identification number assigned automatically to Companies, Partnerships, Freelancers, Sole traders, Other economically active persons/entities. It is not replacing existing identifiers like the Steuernummer (Tax number), USt-IdNr. (VAT ID), IdNr. (Personal tax ID) but is intended to complement and streamline identification across various systems.

Structure of the Germany Economic ID W-IdNr

The W-IdNr is a permanent, unique identifier issued automatically to every economically active business or self-employed individual in Germany. For businesses that already have a VAT ID, the W-IdNr will use the same base (e.g., DE123456789) and add five more digits (e.g., “00001”) to distinguish between different business activities. If your company operates in multiple sectors, it may be assigned additional identifiers such as “00002” or “00003” for each different activity.

Example economic identification number

W-IdNo.: DE123456789

W-IdNr. + distinguishing feature for the first economic activity: DE123456789- 00001

If you already had a VAT ID number by November 30, 2024, this will be your W-ID number. If you don’t yet have a VAT ID number, you will be assigned a new W-ID number.

Do You Need to Apply for the Germany Economic ID?

You do not need to apply for this number. If your business already holds a German VAT ID, the W-IdNr will be automatically assigned and published in the Bundessteuerblatt (Federal Tax Gazette). If your business does not have a VAT ID, you will be able to access your W-IdNr through the ELSTER portal, Germany’s official online tax platform. No individual email or physical letter will be sent, so it is important for business owners to proactively check these platforms.

For online sellers

The W-IdNr will bring several benefits. It will simplify the submission of tax returns, allow easier communication with tax offices, and reduce the need to submit the same information multiple times to different departments. It is also part of Germany’s “once-only principle,” meaning that once a business provides its information to one authority, it should not need to submit it again elsewhere.

Initially, using the W-IdNr in forms and filings will be optional. However, the German tax authorities have made it clear that the W-IdNr will eventually become a mandatory reference number for all official correspondence and submissions, including corporate tax returns, VAT filings, and other compliance activities. It will be especially important for businesses that are subject to multiple tax obligations in Germany, such as VAT and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

What Makes the W-IdNr Different from Germany’s VAT ID?

It is essential to understand that the W-IdNr is different from the VAT ID. While your VAT ID is used primarily for cross-border EU trade and invoicing, the W-IdNr is mainly for internal administrative and tax processes in Germany. Both numbers will continue to exist and serve distinct roles, but over time, the W-IdNr will become more widely used in domestic matters.
